About Beyond Pressure

‘Beyond Pressure’ is an independent art organization created to contribute towards the expanding of Myanmar art boundaries. It is initiated and run by local artists who work in their communities to create projects that open up spaces for self-expression and discourse. As an organization, it operates fluidly, utilizing and forming networks according to necessity. It is therefore an organization close to the ground, highly adaptable, connected and efficient in the restrictive social context of Myanmar. It is one of the most significant as well as the well known art festival in Myanmar.

Our foremost aim is to develop the Myanmar performance art scene by producing an annual festival where foreign and local artists can exchange ideas through workshops, symposia and performances. We want to show in practice that it is possible in contemporary Myanmar to do outstanding and daring performance art in more public spaces, so that we can connect with more people. We aim to engage local media by speaking about Beyond Pressure in popular local journals, magazine, radio & TV channels in order to encourage the idea of performance art in the general cultural consciousness. We also seek to increase international discourse on Myanmar contemporary art by developing our international networks through the festival and beyond. We work on principles of inclusiveness, negotiation and flexibility, aspiring always to go beyond the pressure instead of resisting it.

Our mission is two-fold. Firstly, we aim to create from within, spaces and forums in which people in Myanmar can take part in the representation of themselves, thus reaffirming our place in the global community. Furthermore, through the global power of assembly that art provides, we aim to present critical alternatives to how Myanmar is perceived by the outside world. As its name implies, we aim to go beyond the pressures from within and without that restrict movement and development on a human scale. We truly hope to nuture youths and newcomers alike to the possibilities of art as a social force.

With the organization now in its fourth year, sustainability becomes a central aim. Past activities have allowed us to create many international and local networks. We remain committed to maintaining and building on these bridges, so that they continue to feed into our mission.

FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE PERFORMANCE TRANSMUTED 2011

Non Grata – Anonymous Boh, Devilgirl & Little Tom performing 22.- 28. 08.2011 in TRANSMUTED International Performance Art Festival, Mexico in Ex Teresa Contemporary Art Museum in Mexico City:

What would Jesus do ?

…focused on “a perverted social ethos, which elevates personal freedom to an absolute, and denies the underclass the discipline – tough love – which alone might enable some of its members to escape from the swamp of dependency in which they live”.

But it’s not just about the underclass – it’s about politicians, it’s about bankers, it’s about footballers.

“It’s not just about a particular class, it permeates all levels of society. When we see politicians claiming for flat-screen TVs and getting jailed for fiddling their expenses, it’s clear that young people of all classes aren’t being given appropriate leadership.”

“established community is perceived to provide nothing… It’s not one occasional attack on dignity, it’s a repeated humiliation, being continuously dispossessed in a society rich with possession”.

“But the socially excluded are not always the ones who are rioting – in fact they are often the ones who are most vulnerable to riots. We need a better thought-out approach rather than just using social exclusion as an excuse.”

“Like the overwhelming majority of youth offenders behind bars, these gang members have one thing in common: no father at home.”

“Yes, there are some issues about where boys get a positive sense of masculinity from when they don’t have anyone in the home to give it. But if you have a stable family set-up then these kids can still be very high-achieving.”

“However, it may be that because there’s been so much talk about police spending cuts, the rioters may have internalised the message that they’re less likely to be caught.”

“Several of the rioters who were interviewed clearly enjoyed the feeling of being powerful. They were encouraged to feel that the cities in which they were misbehaving belonged to them.

“However, I don’t think that has anything to do with political correctness. What has characterised British justice over the past 25-30 years is the large numbers of young people we have sent to prison compared with our European neighbours.”

“Too many black men have been killed by the police. Too many black men and women have been treated like criminals when they’re not. This is not the cause of these riots, but it’s there in the mix.”

“the pernicious culture of hatred around rap music, which glorifies violence and loathing of authority (especially the police but including parents), exalts trashy materialism and raves about drugs”.

“As more and more people became embroiled in the riots, others have been tempted to join them, confident that one unexceptional individual in a sea of hundreds is unlikely to be caught or to face retribution,”

..significant is the feeling of invulnerability because they are part of something so big. Also linked to this is the feeling of doing something transgressive and feeling powerful in a culture where they don’t have much power…

Pärnu International Film & Video Festival 9-14. 08. 2011

Pärnu International Film & Video Festival – Fideofest

9 – 14. 08. 2011

Vabaduse temaatikat pisut teisest vaatenurgast avavad Andres Lõo dokumentaal Raul Velbaumist ja Remo Randveri psühheldeelsed fiktsioonid, mille peategelaseks on põlenud majas resideeruv anonüümne mees.

Neljapäeval esitleb Inglismaal elav vene päritolu kunstnik Yelena Popova oma Aatomi Utoopiat käsitlevat lühifilmi javestleb publikuga raudeesriide taga asuvatest suletud linnade ajaloost.

Reede on animatsiooni päralt. Swissfilmi vahendusel jõuab vaatajani Ingo Giezendanneri, Gian Reto Mayeri, Isabelle Favezi, Anne Baillodi, Milan Hofstetteri, Sami Ben Youssefi ja Izabela Riebeni, Adrian Flückigeri, Georges Schwizgebeli, Claudia RöthlinI, Daniel Zwimpferi, Michelle Ettlini, Anja Kofmeli ja Rafael SommerhalderI multifilmilooming.

Laupäeval toimub hispaanlase Jaime Noguera eestvedamisel Pärnu Hispaania Lühifilmide Öö, kus Augustiunetuse puhul kestab maratonprogramm keskööni. Baski ja Andaluusia filmikunst jõuab siia Benalmadena Short and Alternative Film Festivali ja Diputación Provincial de Málaga koostöös. Festivali noorteprogramm kantakse ette Port Artur 2 AV-süsteemis ja Like-Kuldrula tänavakultuurifestivali programmis Munamäe skatepargis. Workshopid ja kogu program on publikule tasuta. DIVERSE UNIVERSE PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL 2011

Diverse Universe is a unique nomadic performance festival, uniting Performance and Live artists from all-across World for 8 weeks. Festival sharing high quality Performance Art and Live Art with audiences across Europe in different cities and countries.

Now in its sixth edition Diverse Universe is one of biggest Performance Art or Live Art festivals in Europe, involving over 200 artists, physically linking 17 European cities across 9 countries, and attracting a combined audience of over 15,000 people. The festival begins in Paris and travels by road around Europe, stopping in Kolin in Check, Berlin in Germany, Pärnu and Tallinn in Estonia, Riga in Latvia, Pori and Tampere in Finland, Stockholm and Malmö in Sweden, Kristiansand and Oslo in Norway, London in England.

“Think international, agitate local” – To make this happen Estonia-based Non Grata Performance Group works closely with international partners to co-organize each stage of the festival in each of the 15 European cities for 2011. Each stage is planned to coincide with a local festival organized by festival partners in each city, thereby maximizing audiences and potential for trans-national dialogue and exchange.

Diverse Universe is an exemplary example of a trans-European project that pools the resources of national organizers around Europe to create one of the largest Performance Art and Live Art festivals in Europe and deliver extraordinary value for money for the arts across Europe. Beyond just being a festival, Diverse Universe forms a large-scale trans- European artist-run network equipped with the expertise to respond to the needs of European performance makers and to activate cultural exchange at a European level. Festival in unifying Nordic-Baltic Performance Art Network, initiative created by Anonymous Boh from Non Grata Group 2010-2011 with the help of Nordic Culture Point. Diverse Universe works in partnership with performance art organizations across Europe to develop networks. As well as presenting their own high quality work, during the festival participating artists also take part together in workshops, collaborative performances, seminars, and discussions. All these activities promote cultural fluidity through exchange of ideas, concerns and cultural perspectives. The scale and duration of Diverse Universe allows for a deep and meaningful interdisciplinary cross-fertilization between artists from different nationalities that pushes the boundaries of contemporary performance art practice, and in turn excites audiences with new work that is affective, thought-provoking and responsive to our current times.

The overall theme of Diverse Universe festival is Diverse Universe.

Embracing the intrinsic value diversity in arts and culture in all its forms for its own sake – including diversity of artistic expression, experimental practices, diversity of nationality, variety of age and social background – And creating a network that brings these diverse expressions and backgrounds together for cultural exchange, debate, and the discovery shared goals and values. Performances are thought-provoking, entertaining and also responsive and sensitive to their current circumstances.

NONGRATA PROUDLY PRESENTS:

part BEAUTY OF THE CAR ACCIDENT 8: Zeppelin Road in Mountains

Based on true story

Last thing I hear is the snapping of veronica’s garter on her leg, which is a song  by Cornelis Vreeswijk, before I fall asleep

And next I wake up and flares show up in front of the car. I cannot do anything to change the situation….

The flares are lit up in every direction, and then the car flies over them….

Like pick up sticks, I guess…

The car goes down into the ditch and whereas your life usually flashes before your eyes before you die…

It did not in my eyes…

The car overturns and we are thrown around I don’t know how many times the car rolled over;  it crosses over to the other side of the road way…

The car windshield shatters and it is so beautiful, the millions of small crystal prisms flying around in the dark night raining down on the pavement

In the dark night…  My eyes are big and follow the broken glass like chandeliers falling on the black asphalt …

The car continues to slide down the road on it’s rooftop and the car roof is crushed and then the oil and gas begin to leak and flow around…

The road is against my head and it seems as though my hair is being stripped away, the road enters my brain through the meat and my cranium before the

Car finally comes to a sudden halt….

All is dark now and the engine is laying there completely broken into 2 parts

I am hanging upside down still strapped in by my seat belt and I wake up screaming

The people in the back seat wake up having slept through the whole event; surprised they clamber out the side windows….

Confused one runs into the bushes and crouches over in complete darkness………..

Fearing that cars might crash into the car I try to pull on of my passengers out of the window but the window is broken and I am afraid it might

Cut his leg ………

All seems to be conveniently arranged quickly, almost routinely………

Top warning triangle, the car stops

Alert the police and call the ambulance. The phone is lost it also being drunk………….

I can see the ambulance coming and suddenly I go into shock I begin laughing then suddenly begin hysterically crying…

From laughing into crying from tears to laughing uncontrollably….

The crying lasts for a couple of minutes…

I can walk but they tell me to get into the wheelchair….

They place me in the stretcher and I lay there like being in a cage with my hands wrapped straight up in the air…

The police come to me and run a breath test for alcohol, they stick it in my mouth and tell me to blow…

Blow he says…..

I blow into it and it appears that I have less than the minimum blood alcohol limit..

Ofcourse I usually just smoke the hash and have had only a little bit of wine…

I can see how frustrated the cop is and he leans over to me and says: I REALLY HOPE THAT YOU NOT GONE BE OK !!!!

As I lay there I get the feeling that everyone thinks that I am a bad person….

I feel alone, nobody wants anything to do with me or cares about me, and I don’t either, they can take my license away as far as I’m concerned….

My offense would have been worse but the guardian angels were watching over me during that infernal road trip.

IN GRAAFIKA + PNP = FUTURISM

Laupäeval 8. Jaanuaril kell 14.00 avatakse Pärnus Rahvusvaheline IN Graafika festival „FUTURISM“.
NEOFUTURISM – kontinentideülene ekspositsioon The Dirty Printmakers of America – Spread the Ink!, Amazing Hancock Brothers, EVILPRINTS – Discusting The Masses Since 1995!, Howlingprint, Hiina industriaalrevolutsioon, Korea joonistustevabriku joonistusmasinad, Jaapani tehnikaulme, Prantsuse tehnokraataõudus, USA Cannonball Press – nende printimispressid töötavad pausideta.
Eesti kunsti vaieldamatu suurmeister Raul Meel alustab oma 70 juubeliaastat massiivsete masinlike tekstimassiividega Endla Teatris, rühmitus C.n.O.P.T. ´i (Marian Kivila, Sandra Vellevoog, Ville-Karel Viirelaid) sünged verbaalsed mängud käsitlevad futurismi pahupoolt – kunsti surma lineaarse ajaloomudeli lõppu.
In Graafika noortenäitused on koostanud Jaak Visnap ja Urmas Viik – Kuldaeg on tagasi! Elijah Värttö Austraaliast esitab avamistel helikonstruktsioone koos futuplahvatustega.
Kellele temaatiline kunstivalmistamine on täiesti vastunäidustatud ja tehnoobia füüsiliselt vastik, nendele on koostatud täiesti eraldi ekspositsioon – 2010 aasta graafika maailma eri paigust ja võin lubada – sellel juba pole futurismiga midagi tegemist.
In Graafika kauaaegne partner PNP täiendab samaaegselt FUTURISMI teemat – kavas on loengud, kontserdid, töötoad, diskussioonid, etendused, teoste ühiskuulamised ja -vaatamised. Festivalil süvenetakse futuristlike kontseptsioonide sisusse ning eksponeeritakse futuristlikus vaimus loodud kunstiteoseid. Toimub sümpoosion, millel kunsti- ja muusikateadlased, filosoofid ja ajaloolased Eestist ja välismaalt arutlevad futurismi üle. Neljandat korda toimub erinevate kunstialade esindajaid ühendav multimeediumitöötuba, mille oluliseks osaks on haridusprogramm Pärnu koolide õpilastele. Töötoa tulemuseks on eksperimentaalne kontsert-etendus MÜRADE KUNST. Ühiselt jätkatakse Vikipeediapõhise elektroonilise muusika tehnoloogia käsiraamatu koostamist.
Osalevad kunstnikud – , Igor Gurovich, Eric Belousov, Anna Naumova, Erken Kagarov, Dima Kavko, Peeter Allik, Toomas Kuusing, Aivar Kurvits, Taje Tross, Sven-Erik Stamberg, The Dirty Printmakers of America, Joseph Velasquez, Ryan O’Malley, Amazing Hancock Brothers, Tom Huck, Dennis McNett, USA Cannonball Press, SP 38, Nathan Meltz, Favianna Rodriquez, Sean Starwars, Christal Kanney, Connie Zamorano, Patric Seal, Kathie Seal, Mikey Dwitt, Morgan Schagerberg, Jones Curtis, Raul Meel, Albert Gulk, Berit Pajula, Aap Kaur Suvi, Liina Loper, Ats Nukki, Jüri Arrak , Britta Benno, Siim Erlenheim, Gudrun Heamägi, Artur Vincent Kerge, Lauri Koppel, Leonhard Lapin, Liina Loper, Ats Nukki, Berit Pajula, Anna Liisa Rajamart , Kadi Reintamm, Lilli Krööt Repnau, Aap Kaur Suvi, Mari Liis Oksar, Marge Olderman, Nora Särak, Evi Tihemets, Vive Tolli, Martin Tõns, Ragne Uutsalu, Vello Vinn, Mare Vint, Marje Üksine, Sirpa Hynninen ja Vesaville Saarinen, Isidro Lopez, Jean-Erik Kullberg, Saara Pakarinen, Kaisa Järvinen, Juhani Järvinen, Ira Yuzhanina, Artem Gridin, Aleksandr Mesherkin, Aleksandra Novozhenova, Aleksandr Lartsev, Valiahmed Popov, Magnus Haravee, Valter Jakovski, Andrei Kormashov, Vello Lillemets, Dmitri Makonnen, Marko Kekishev, Janek Murd, Anne Pikkov, Siirup, Martin Rästa, Martin Pedanik, Margus Tamm, Endla Toots, Kristjan Tramberg, Silver Vahtre, Eveli Varik, Martin Veisman, Uku Küttis, Tõnis Laanemaa, Kelli Valk, Karolin Kaie, Küllike Pihlap, Hille Karm, Marian Kivila, Sandra Vellevoog, Ville-Karel Viirelaid jt.

PÄRNU FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL 2010

23. – 24. OCTOBER PORT ARTUR 2 PÄRNU/ESTONIA

The aim of the Pärnu Film and Video Festival – FIDEOFESTIVAL has been to map the Estonian audiovisual landscape (film, video art, documentary anthropology, and virtual media) and offer insights into what happens in the rest of the world on a non-commercial experimental level.

The concept that launched the Pärnu Film and Video Festival in the 1990s was to lose the defined and institutional borders between film and video art, narrative and conceptualism, professionals and profane ones, artists and cinema freaks. This energetic pluralism on a small territory – refuting and clearing out hierarchies, defining common grounds or confrontation – was a new thing in Estonia at the time and was met with incredible reactions, when viewed in retrospect. A whole new concept was formed for this purpose – the ‘fideo festival’.

Once titled as the film event of barbarians, the alternative festival has by now successfully met expectations with the help of the information society. What comes next? Video art has risen from the marginal status of a few experimentalists and enthusiasts into the mainstream and the global technological evolution has been overwhelming. Since the beginning of the 1990s, when there was only a handful of VHS cameras in Estonia and it took months, not to mention a small fortune, to book an editing session, things have moved on and we have reached an audiovisual frenzy – now everyone has become the director, cameraman and producer of their home cinema and don’t need anything aside from a mobile phone and the YouTube.

What is video art after video art? This gone be found out in Pärnu Fideofestival.

This year theme is Fideosupermarket. Fideofestival takes over free commercial boxes in Port Artur Shopping Center and fills them with AV-installations. Borders between underground and commercial, art and money, icons and global market hyper brain behind mass culture, free soul and market monkey – who leads who in this crazy interesting over warming free market.

Tons of videos, fideoshop rental, international conference “Prize of Good Art” and even more.
